A nuclear power plant has many advantages.
Firstly , a nuclear power plant is a powerful and stable source of energy.
Secondly , the emergence of nuclear power plants leads to the development of science and production while providing tens of thousands of various qualified and high demand jobs.
Thirdly , a nuclear power plant is a reliable basis for a state’s energy security.
Nuclear power plants are among the most complex technogenic facilities in the world requiring the highest construction qualifications. There are such specialists in Russia, as our country was the first in the world to commission a new 3+ generation power plant. At present, Russian nuclear engineers are busy constructing 35 nuclear power-generating units abroad.
This special project by the TASS brings to the fore all the advantages of a nuclear power plant and explains how the construction of a nuclear power plant can change the people’s lives for the better.

How does an NPP and a nuclear reactor work?

The heart of the nuclear power plant is the reactor .
These highly sophisticated technical structures are the workings of hundreds of physicists, mathematicians and engineers. But when it comes to the simplified principle of operation behind a nuclear reactor, one can recall the words of academician Igor Kurchatov who once compared it to a pot of boiling water, except water in it is being heated not from the outside, but from the inside with the help of nuclear fuel.
Apart from the fuel, the reactor also contains coolant , that is, something that accumulates and transfers heat. In most cases water is used as the coolant, but there are also reactors in which other coolants (for example, molten metals) are used instead. Heated water turns into steam and is then fed to a turbine generator rotor. Thanks to this, the latter spins up to generate electricity.
Having left the turbines, the steam is being condensed and directed back to the steam generator for further heating and evaporation. Condensation of the steam getting out of the turbine takes place inside the special cooling systems, such as cooling towers , cooling ponds (both natural and artificial ones) and special pools. The water remains absolutely unpolluted here, and the fish is commonly being bred in such ponds adjacent to NPPs.
Turbine-generated electricity is then being supplied to the grid and finally to the consumers. NPP is a power source for everyone, that is, both for residential areas and industrial facilities.

In the past fifty years, many nuclear power plants have been built all around the world. However, it is the Engineering Division of the Rosatom State Corporation that has been designing and constructing Russia’s and the world’s most state-of-the-art, reliable and safe generation 3+ nuclear power plants.
